Four 10-hour shifts per week

Applications for employment with the Mesquite Police Department are processed in accordance with provisions of the State of Texas Firefighter’s and Police Officer’s Civil Service Act, Chapter 143 and the City of Mesquite Firefighter’s and Police Officer’s Civil Service Program.

 

All individuals seeking employment as a police officer will undergo the following:

  • Open, competitive and free Civil Service Examination
    (Must score 70 or better, candidates ranked by exam score)
  • Physical agility course: 300 meter run in 90 seconds, 15 situps in 90 seconds, 10 pushups in 90 seconds, 12 inch vertical jump
  • Polygraph examination
  • Oral interview board
  • Extensive background investigation
  • Psychological examination
  • Medical examination

*New police officers will be subject to an 18-month probationary period.

 

Basic Requirements

  • U.S. Citizen (under the provisions of State Civil Service Law)
  • Age: Candidates must be not less than 21 years of age nor more than 50 years of age.
  • Vision: At least 20/70 uncorrected in each eye, correctable to 20/20 in each eye, with no color blindness.
  • Hearing: Candidate may not be certified as eligible if audiometric testing shows average hearing loss in their unaided better ear greater than 40 decibels (dB) at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz when the audiometric device is calibrated to ANSI Z24.5
  • Candidates must have successfully completed the required hours of college credit shown below from an accredited college or university* in any subject.  Remedial courses and course grades below “C” will not be accepted.
  • Must meet TCOLE certification requirements.

Requirements for Lateral Transfer Eligibility

  • Same as Basic Requirements with the following exceptions:
  • Age: Candidates must be not less than 21 years of age nor more than 55 years of age.
  • A Lateral Entry Applicant shall have at least 2 years of cumulative service as paid, full-time certified peace officer with one or more Comparable Law Enforcement Agencies;
  • A Lateral Entry Applicant shall have served in one or more positions where he or she had the authority to enforce laws, investigate crimes, make arrests, respond to calls for service, carry a firearm, and use discretion as part of the Lateral Entry Applicant's assigned duties. Time spent in an academy, serving in a jail or in any position not meeting the foregoing criteria as determined by the Chief, in the Chief's sole discretion, shall not be counted when calculating a Lateral Entry Appliccant's eligibility for the Lateral Entry Program.
  • A Lateral Entry Applicant shall not have more than a 3 year break in service from the time the applicant left a Comparable Law Enforcement Agency and the time the applicant applies for employment with the Department.
  • Except as expressly provided in the Article, Lateral Entry Applicants hired under the Lateral Entry Program must successfully complete each step in the civil service hiring process in the same manner as any other applicant including, without limitation, all Lateral Entry Applicants must pass the civil service exam, physical agility testing, background investigation, medical and psychological assessments.
  • The Chief shall make the final determination as to (1) whether a Lateral Entry Applicant satisfies the eligibility requirements for the Lateral Entry Program including, without limitation, whether a Lateral Entry Applicant's prior years of service, position(s) and break in service satisfy the criteria set forth herein; and (2) the maximum number of Lateral Entry Applicants to be hired by the Department each fiscal year. The Chief's decisions shall be final and non-appealable to the Commission or to any court.

Education and Experience Requirements

Candidates must either: 

  •  possess an associate's, bachelor's, master's or doctorate's degree from an accredited college or university* with a grade point average of 2.0 or greater; or
  •  have successfully completed 60 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university* in any subject, provided the calculation of hours successfully completed shall not include any remedial courses or course grades below "C"; or
  •  have completed a minimum of 2 years of patrol and/or investigative experience as a full-time commissioned police officer plus successfully completed 30 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university* in any subject, provided the calculation of hours successfully completed shall not include any remedial courses or course grades below "C"; or
  •   have completed a minimum of 2 years of active military duty with an honorable discharge plus successfully completed 30 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university* in any subject, provided the calculation of hours successfully completed shall not include any remedial courses or course grades below "C"; or
  •  have completed a minimum of 2 years of full-time employment with the City of Mesquite Police Department, in a non-sworn position, plus successfully completed 30 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university* in any subject, provided the calculation of hours successfully completed shall not include any remedial courses or course grades below "C"; or
  • have completed a minimum of 3 years active military duty with an honorable discharge in the United States Armed Forces, the reserve components the United States Armed Forces, the Texas State Guard, or any combination thereof. Must have a High School Diploma or GED.

An accredited college or university must be accredited by one of the following agencies:

  •  Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
  •  Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools or Middle States Commission on Higher Education
  •  New England Association of Colleges and Schools
  •  Higher Learning Commission - formerly known as North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
  • Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
  •  Western Association of Schools and Colleges

Coursework from a foreign college or university will also be accepted after being reviewed by an agency that is certified by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) to determine the course taken, credit received and letter grade earned.

Uniforms and Equipment: Furnished by the department; uniforms cleaned at the department's expense.

  • Copy of FORM DD-214 (If Applicable) 5 extra points will be added to those who have served 180 days of active duty, received an honorable discharge, and make a passing grade (70 or better) on the written exam.
  • Copy of valid driver's license


The Civil Service exam will begin at 9:00am. Please bring your valid driver ’s license to the test. The physical agility test will take place at the Mesquite Police Department Firing Range in the afternoon following the exam for all applicants who pass the written exam.

 Applicants should have the following documents available during the background investigation phase of the hiring process:

  • Certified Copies of High School Transcripts or GED (must be official and sealed upon receipt)
  • Certified Copies of transcripts from all accredited colleges and universities* attended (Must be official and sealed upon receipt).
  • Certified Copy of Birth Certificate
  • Copy of Marriage license or licenses from each marriage
  • Complete copy of Divorce decree or decrees from each marriage
  • Copy of FORM DD-214 (if applicable)
