Police Officer

Base Pay: $58,639.68
Monthly: $4,886.64
Biweekly: $2,255.37
Hourly: $28.19

Four 10-hour shifts per week

Applications for employment with the Mesquite Police Department are processed in accordance with provisions of the State of Texas Firefighter’s and Police Officer’s Civil Service Act, Chapter 143 and the City of Mesquite Firefighter’s and Police Officer’s Civil Service Program.


All individuals seeking employment as a police officer will undergo the following:

  • Open, competitive and free Civil Service Examination
    (Must score 70 or better, candidates ranked by exam score)
  • Physical agility course: 300 meter run in 90 seconds, 15 situps in 90 seconds, 10 pushups in 90 seconds, 12 inch vertical jump
  • Polygraph examination
  • Oral interview board
  • Extensive background investigation
  • Psychological examination
  • Medical examination

*New police officers will be subject to an 18-month probationary period.



  • U.S. Citizen (under the provisions of State Civil Service Law)
  • Age: Candidates must be not less than 21 years of age nor more than 44 years of age.
  • Vision: At least 20/70 uncorrected in each eye, correctable to 20/20 in each eye, with no color blindness.
  • Hearing: Candidate may not be certified as eligible if audiometric testing shows average hearing loss in their unaided better ear greater than 40 decibels (dB) at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz when the audiometric device is calibrated to ANSI Z24.5
  • Candidates must have successfully completed the required hours of college credit shown below from an accredited college or university* in any subject.  Remedial courses and course grades below “C” will not be accepted.
  • Must meet TCOLE certification requirements.
  • Education:
  • a) Except as provided below, all applicants must have completed 60 hours of college credit*.
  • b) Applicants with a minimum of two (2) years of patrol and/or investigative experience as a full-time commissioned police officer or active military duty must have completed 30 hours of college credit*.  Military discharge must be honorable, to be eligible for an additional five points on the entrance examination after receiving a passing grade.  
  • c) Applicants with a minimum of two (2) years of full-time employment with the City of Mesquite Police Department, in a non-sworn position, must have completed 30 hours of college credit*.


  • Life Insurance: 2 x annual salary
  • Two medical insurance plans offered through AETNA.
  • Dental: Coverage available at group rates
  • Vacation: 15 days per year (20 days after 15 years of service, 25 days after 25 years of service)
  • Sick Leave: 15 days per year, may be accumulated without limit (with payment upon termination for up to 90 days of unused sick leave)
  • Holidays: 10 days per year and 1 floating holiday.
  • Retirement: Texas Municipal Retirement System and Social Security

Uniforms and Equipment: Furnished by the department; uniforms cleaned at the department's expense.

  • Copy of FORM DD-214 (If Applicable) 5 extra points will be added to those who have served 180 days of active duty, received an honorable discharge, and make a passing grade (70 or better) on the written exam.
  • Copy of valid driver's license

The Civil Service exam will begin at 8:30am. Please bring your valid driver ’s license to the test. The physical agility test will take place at the Mesquite Police Department Firing Range in the afternoon following the exam for all applicants who pass the written exam.

Applicants should have the following documents available to be submitted immediately following testing:

  • Certified Copies of High School Transcripts or GED (must be official and sealed upon receipt)
  • Certified Copies of transcripts from all accredited colleges and universities* attended (Must be official and sealed upon receipt).
  • Certified Copy of Birth Certificate
  • Copy of Marriage license or licenses from each marriage
  • Complete copy of Divorce decree or decrees from each marriage
  • Copy of FORM DD-214 (if applicable)

*An “accredited college or university” is an institution of higher education that is accredited by one of the following agencies: Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, or Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Coursework from a foreign college or university will also be accepted after being reviewed by an agency that is certified by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) to determine the course taken, credit received and letter grade earned.
